Sprawl rant

So after reading another article about the Interstate 5 pileup/tunnel fireball, I saw a quote that Tejon Ranch and Newhall Ranch, over the mountains from LA, are going to be developed with 20,000+ new homes each, for a total of 120,000 new residents. And when I saw that, I just became even more confused by urban sprawl. What would inspire someone to move to a new subdivision on the other side of a mountain range from the closest employer? That goes for places like Victorville as well. Why would you move someplace with no infrastructure to speak of and on a natural commute bottleneck?

Is the new house worth it?

Why the hell are we building so many new homes when there's a national mortgage crisis? And, oh yeah, constantly rising gas prices? It boggles the mind.
